How It Works

Formula

Gross=Net×(1+Rate100)\text{Gross} = \text{Net} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{Rate}}{100}\right)

Net=Gross1+Rate100\text{Net} = \frac{\text{Gross}}{1 + \dfrac{\text{Rate}}{100}}

Variables

Net\text{Net}

Price before tax

Gross\text{Gross}

Price including tax

VAT\text{VAT}

Tax amount (Gross − Net)

Rate\text{Rate}

VAT or sales-tax rate (percent)

Choose whether to add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a gross amount, then enter the amount and the tax rate. The calculator instantly returns the net amount, the tax amount, and the gross amount.

Add VAT (the amount you enter is the net price):

  1. Compute the gross: Gross=Net×(1+Rate/100)\text{Gross} = \text{Net} \times (1 + \text{Rate}/100).
  2. The tax portion is VAT=Net×(Rate/100)\text{VAT} = \text{Net} \times (\text{Rate}/100).

Remove VAT (the amount you enter is the gross price):

  1. Compute the net: Net=Gross/(1+Rate/100)\text{Net} = \text{Gross} / (1 + \text{Rate}/100).
  2. The tax portion is VAT=GrossNet\text{VAT} = \text{Gross} - \text{Net}.

A common mistake is to subtract the percentage directly. Subtracting 20% from $120 gives $96, but the correct net is $100 — because the 20% tax was applied on top of the net, not the gross.

Frequently Asked Questions

01What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?
This calculator uses the same percentage math for VAT, GST, or sales tax. Enter the rate you want to add to a net price or remove from a gross price.
02How do I add VAT to a net price?
Multiply the net price by (1 + rate/100). For example, $100 + 20% VAT = $100 × 1.20 = $120. The calculator does this automatically when you select "Add VAT to amount."
03How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross price by (1 + rate/100). For example, $120 including 20% VAT: $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100 net. A common mistake is subtracting the percentage directly — $120 minus 20% gives $96, which is wrong.
04What VAT rate should I use?
Use the rate you want to test for your item, receipt, or example. The calculator applies the percentage you enter; it does not choose a rate for you.
05Can I use this for GST?
Yes. If you want to model GST as a percentage added to or included in a price, enter that percentage here.
