Area Converter

Convert room, apartment, patio, parcel, and land area figures between square metric units, square imperial units, acres, and hectares. Built for known area values only.

Examples

Convert a 12 m² room into ft² for a flooring comparison.

Converted area
129.1669 ft²
Conversion
\begin{aligned}\text{12}\,\mathrm{m^2} &\times \dfrac{\text{1}\,\mathrm{m^2}/\mathrm{m^2}}{\text{0.09290304}\,\mathrm{m^2}/\mathrm{ft^2}} \\ &= \text{129.1669}\,\mathrm{ft^2}\end{aligned}

The result is larger because the target area unit is smaller. One source unit holds about 10.76 target units.

How It Works

Formula

r=v×ffromftor = v \times \dfrac{f_{\text{from}}}{f_{\text{to}}}

Variables

vv

Input area value

rr

Converted area

ffromf_{\text{from}}

Square-meter factor of the source unit()

ftof_{\text{to}}

Square-meter factor of the target unit()

The calculator uses square meters as the canonical base unit. It multiplies your input by the exact square-meter factor for the source unit, then divides by the exact square-meter factor for the target unit. The result is a pure unit conversion, not an estimate.

Reference factors used by the calculator (square meters per unit):

  • 1 mm² = 0.000001 m²
  • 1 cm² = 0.0001 m²
  • 1 m² = 1 m²
  • 1 km² = 1,000,000 m²
  • 1 in² = 0.00064516 m²
  • 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²
  • 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m²
  • 1 mi² = 2,589,988.110336 m²
  • 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m²
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m²

The result row also shows the factor trail used for the specific conversion so you can audit the number directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

01How does this area converter work?
Every unit is defined by its exact square-meter value. The calculator converts the input into square meters first, then divides by the target unit factor. That keeps every pair consistent: room sizes, listings, patios, and land parcels all use the same formula.
02How many square feet are in a square meter?
1 m² equals about 10.7639 ft² because 1 ft² equals exactly 0.09290304 m². Going the other direction, 1 ft² equals about 0.0929 m².
03How many square meters are in an acre or a hectare?
1 acre equals exactly 4046.8564224 m², and 1 hectare equals exactly 10,000 m². That is why 1 hectare is about 2.4711 acres.
04Why do area numbers change so quickly between units?
Area units scale in two dimensions. If a length unit changes by a factor of 10, the matching area unit changes by a factor of 100. That is why values jump sharply between mm², m², km², and square imperial units.
05Can this tell me property value, taxes, zoning, or material needs?
No. This tool converts one known area into another unit only. It does not estimate price, legal treatment, coverage rules, tile counts, or material quantities.
