Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there so many different "cup" sizes?
Cup sizes are not standardized internationally. The US legal cup (used on FDA nutrition labels) is 240 ml. The metric cup, common in Australia and many EU contexts, is 250 ml. The Japanese cup is 200 ml. Pick the cup that matches the recipe you are following — using the wrong one introduces a 4–20% error.
Why do US, UK, and Australian tablespoons differ?
A US tablespoon is 14.79 ml, a UK tablespoon is 17.76 ml, and an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml. Recipes rarely state which one they mean, so default to the country of origin of the recipe. The same is true for fluid ounces: US is 29.57 ml, UK is 28.41 ml.
Can I convert grams of flour or sugar to cups here?
No. This converter handles volume only. Weight conversions for solid ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, etc.) depend on density, which varies with how the ingredient is packed (sifted vs scooped) and even with the brand or grain. Use a kitchen scale for accurate weight measurements.
How precise should I be when converting for baking?
For baking — especially yeasted breads, cakes, and pastry — small volume differences matter. Use the displayed precision rather than rounding aggressively. For everyday cooking, soups, and stews, rounding to the nearest whole milliliter is fine.
What about teaspoon and tablespoon variants?
A teaspoon is consistently 4.93 ml across US, UK, and Australian conventions, so we list it once. The tablespoon is the variable one (US 14.79 ml, UK 17.76 ml, AU 20 ml), so choose the regional tablespoon that matches your recipe.
